There are currently 34,054 artificial objects in low Earth orbit. As reported by Miraz.TV with reference to NASA’s Orbital Debris Quarterly News, this figure has grown by 956 over the past three months.

Out of these 34,000-plus tracked items, approximately 19,000 are active and decommissioned spacecraft. The remaining 14,900 objects consist of spent rocket stages and fragments discarded in space.

Top Countries: United States, Russia, and China

The United States accounts for the largest share of tracked objects in orbit, with a total of 18,300 items. This includes 13,600 spacecraft and 4,700 rocket stages and debris fragments.

Russia ranks second with 6,575 tracked orbital assets, a figure that decreased by 11 over the last quarter. China holds third place with 5,737 objects, increasing its total by 104 in the past month alone.

Contributions from Other Nations

Other countries and international bodies account for smaller shares in low Earth orbit:

  • United Kingdom — 727 objects
  • France — 649 objects
  • Japan — 322 objects
  • India — 191 objects
  • European Space Agency (ESA) — 132 objects

All remaining nations and organizations combined hold 1,398 tracked objects in space.

The Growing Hazard of Untracked Orbital Debris

NASA’s figures reflect only trackable items and do not capture the full extent of orbital debris in low Earth orbit. Many fragments are too small to monitor with current tracking systems.

These untracked small particles are vastly more numerous and present significant dangers. Due to extreme orbital velocities, even a millimeter-sized piece of debris can inflict catastrophic damage on operational satellites or endanger crewed spacecraft missions.
