US President Donald Trump has confirmed the death sentence handed down in 2013 to former officer and military psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, who carried out a mass shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas.

Miraz.TV reports, citing Agence France-Presse (AFP), that US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recommended executing Nidal Hasan by firing squad, a proposal endorsed by the president.

The exact date and location of the execution will be determined by authorities in Pennsylvania or Pentagon leadership.

A Rare Precedent in US Military History

Under US law, any death sentence issued against military personnel must be officially approved by the president. If carried out, this will mark the first execution of a US service member since 1961, as well as the first military execution by firing squad since 1945.

The 2009 Fort Hood Massacre

On November 5, 2009, Major Nidal Hasan, a US citizen of Palestinian descent, shouted the Takbir and opened fire on unarmed fellow service members gathered for medical processing, killing 13 people. Paralyzed after being shot by responding police, Hasan claimed his actions were aimed at protecting Muslims in Afghanistan from American troops.

In 2013, a military tribunal established that the attack was inspired by the ideology of the Al-Qaeda terrorist network and unanimously sentenced Hasan to death.
