Today, the 81st session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly is commencing in New York. Official representatives from nearly 200 countries worldwide are expected to attend the event at the organization’s headquarters in New York. The high-level week of the session will run from September 22 to 28.
Starting yesterday, heads of state and government from around the world have already begun arriving in New York.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is not expected to attend this UN event.
This year’s session is dedicated to the theme: “Rethinking trust, driving transformation: A UN that delivers for everyone.”
Current UN Secretary-General António Guterres will open the General Assembly session for the last time, as his term in office concludes at the end of this year.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman will preside over the 81st session.
During the high-level week of the session, traditionally the first address will belong to Brazil, followed by the host country, the United States. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to deliver his address at the General Assembly for the 16th time.
The main agenda of the session will feature pressing issues facing the world, including humanitarian crises, climate change, artificial intelligence, nuclear disarmament, and other global matters.
Various bilateral meetings between heads of state and government are also expected to take place on the sidelines of the General Assembly’s high-level week, where international and regional issues will reportedly be discussed.
Most importantly, the future of the Russia-Ukraine war will be one of the central discussion topics of the 81st session.
Experts believe that the primary goal of European leaders arriving in New York is to persuade Donald Trump to support greater military aid for Ukraine. Europeans believe that if America supplies new missiles to Ukraine, Kyiv could gain a stronger advantage in the war by January.
