President Donald Trump held a White House meeting on Thursday with Russian Presidential Envoy Kirill Dmitriev to discuss an expansive security framework that would extend beyond Ukraine.
"There's going to be an agreement, it's going to be a big agreement and it's going to involve more than Ukraine," President Trump said regarding the diplomatic efforts.
The Russian envoy visited the White House for a ceremony marking a temporary six-day truce in the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky, which was negotiated with the assistance of First Lady Melania Trump. That local ceasefire enabled nearly 800 civilians to evacuate from the contested area out of an estimated population of 2,000 residents. While Ukrainian parliamentary faction leader Davyd Arakhamia and human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets also attended the humanitarian ceremony, President Trump did not hold talks with them, and his reasons for declining to meet have not been stated.
In parallel, United States envoy Jared Kushner led discussions on Thursday at NATO headquarters in Brussels with Ukrainian and European officials, focusing on regional defense architecture and future security guarantees.
The United States will next participate in trilateral talks with Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Abu Dhabi, marking the first three-way negotiations between the parties since February.
