One person died and three others sustained injuries after two separate shootings on the Winston-Salem State University campus in North Carolina on Saturday night, police said.
The violence occurred while the university was celebrating its annual homecoming weekend. Dispatchers took the first report of gunfire at about 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, prompting university authorities to place the campus under a security lockdown.
Police started allowing students to return to residence halls by 1:25 a.m. on Sunday, and authorities lifted the lockdown early Sunday morning. The Winston-Salem Police Department and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office held an on-campus briefing at 1:45 a.m.
No suspects have been taken into custody. Winston-Salem Police Assistant Chief Jason Swaim stated that investigators have not determined whether the two shootings are linked. Law enforcement agencies plan to deploy additional officers across the campus and nearby neighborhoods over the following days.
