The United States government paid billions of dollars to individuals who were no longer working last year. The total amount reached $9.5 billion.

Over 140,000 Federal Employees Affected

Miraz.TV reports that the government notified many federal workers of their dismissal under specific programs last year, after which they ceased their duties. The total number of laid-off employees exceeded 140,000.

Interestingly, although these individuals effectively stopped working, they remained on the payroll. By the end of September last year, the amount paid to these non-working employees surpassed $7 billion, with an additional $2.5 billion paid in the following months.

However, according to a report by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), these funds were not paid in error; they were officially issued as administrative payments (paid leave) during the layoff process.
