Attracting more investment to the country has been one of the top priorities in the Trump Administration’s foreign policy.

And it must be acknowledged that the White House has largely achieved this goal.

For instance, according to reports by Bloomberg citing knowledgeable sources, US President Donald Trump plans to announce an initiative for South Korea to invest $200 billion in the domestic economy. One of the main areas of this investment package is the allocation of $54 billion to the long-delayed liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Alaska.

The expected announcement at the White House will mark the first step in implementing investment commitments under a bilateral trade agreement signed last year. Under that agreement, Seoul committed to investing a total of $350 billion in the US economy.

$54 Billion Allocated to the Alaska LNG Project

The majority of South Korean investments are expected to be directed toward the Alaska LNG project, which is being carried out by the Glenfarne Group. The project involves building a natural gas pipeline approximately 1,300 kilometers long from the North Slope of Alaska to the state’s southern coast, followed by the liquefaction and export of the produced gas to Asian markets.

Reports indicate that the investments will be used to overcome infrastructure and financing problems that have delayed the project’s realization for many years.

Seoul’s interest in this project is also linked to the changing situation in the global gas market. Conflicts in the Middle East pose supply risks from major exporters such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. In this environment, Asian countries are paying closer attention to long-term supply sources to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on spot markets.

Energy Sector Cooperation and Future Prospects

The initiative expected to be announced at the White House is also significant in demonstrating the US administration’s efforts to attract foreign investment. The presentation is expected to be attended by Republican Senator Dan Sullivan from Alaska, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.

Along with the Alaska LNG project, South Korean capital is also planned to be invested in other areas of the US energy sector, including nuclear energy projects.

Nevertheless, the real impact of the investment agreement on the energy market is not expected to be felt immediately. The construction of the gas pipeline, completion of infrastructure, and commencement of commercial operations may take several years.

The implementation of the project could expand US capabilities to export LNG to Asian markets while enabling South Korea to diversify its long-term energy supplies.
