“Hellish” Sanctions Against Russia
Harsh “hellish” sanctions are set to be imposed on Russia, following US President Donald Trump’s signing of a relevant bill.
Miraz.TV reports that the document authorizes the US President to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on major buyers of Russian energy products, as well as duties of up to 500 percent on imports from Russia. The document also provides a framework for imposing duties on Iran’s trading partners.
Mechanism for Waiving Sanctions
The passage of the law does not guarantee the mandatory implementation of sanctions: the President can still waive them by providing a written justification, without needing congressional approval. In other words, Trump will effectively be able to decide whether or not to apply the sanctions. He will only be required to explain the reasoning for his decision to Congress if he chooses to waive them.
After signing the document, Trump has 30 days to either impose the sanctions or grant exemptions. This period expires approximately on October 18.
