The White House AI task force will prepare a comprehensive report within four months outlining the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence while defining the federal government’s responsibilities in the sector.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the announcement was made by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, who was selected to lead the Superintelligence Task Force previously announced by President Donald Trump. “The president has directed the formation of a team to ensure that we remain the leader in superintelligence and that the interests of American citizens are paramount,” Clayton stated.

Operating Principles and Industry Responsibility

A White House source indicated that this role effectively places Clayton in charge of guiding national AI development. The task force is set to operate under the premise that primary responsibility for mitigating potential risks rests with the AI industry itself. “As in other industries, I expect dialogue to produce mechanisms,” Clayton noted.

Legislative Review and Regulatory Balance

Clayton added that his task force will review existing legislation and evaluate potential measures that the U.S. Congress could enact.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the charter dictates that the new team will develop plans to counter societal threats posed by artificial intelligence while strictly avoiding excessive regulations that could stifle innovation and competitiveness.

In an interview with Axios in late September, Trump described Clayton as a highly qualified, “good person” to oversee AI development within his administration, adding that a formal candidate selection would be finalized within three to four days.
