Ukraine peace deal: Trump, Zelenskyy discuss new Article 5-like security

2 Min Read

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in the Oval Office on Monday to advance discussions on a potential peace agreement to conclude the war with Russia.

The high-stakes meeting at the White House centered on a comprehensive proposal aimed at stopping the ongoing conflict.

A primary objective of the diplomatic talks is to find a viable path to end the killing that has persisted for years. President Trump has also been in communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the negotiations.

A New Security Framework for Ukraine

A central element of the proposed peace deal involves providing Ukraine with “Article 5-like protection,” a security guarantee mirroring the collective defense clause of NATO.

This framework could see the deployment of U.S. troops to the region, not for combat, but to ensure security and stability under the terms of a potential agreement.

The discussions represent a significant step in defining Ukraine’s long-term security architecture outside of formal NATO membership.

Broad Diplomatic Engagements

The meeting in Washington follows a series of related diplomatic efforts. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff has been actively involved in the process.

Over the past week, President Trump engaged with key European leaders to build support for the initiative.

These conversations included discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Talks also took place on Sunday with European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen. The engagement with European allies and the new NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte, underscores a coordinated international approach to resolving the conflict.
