In the Azerbaijani epic “Koroghlu,” there is a significant moment. When Koroghlu encounters a firearm for the first time, he realizes that the age of face-to-face, honorable combat is coming to an end. A person can now take another person’s life from a distance, simply by pulling a trigger without ever looking his opponent in the eye.
The Difference Between War and Terrorism
Yes, war is one thing. Fighting an opponent face-to-face is another. But terrorism is something entirely different—a cowardly act that deliberately targets innocent and defenseless people.
I did not mention this example by chance.
Today, on September 11, we once again remember how devastating terrorism can be—a tragedy whose pain the people of Azerbaijan have also experienced at different times in their history.
Remembering a Global Tragedy
Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, the United States of America, widely regarded as a symbol of democracy and freedom, faced one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in human history. Thousands of innocent people lost their lives, and the lives of thousands of families were changed forever in just a matter of hours.
The September 11 attacks were not only an attack against America. They were a crime against innocent civilians, against human life, and against humanity itself.
Twenty-five years have passed, but the pain of that day has not disappeared from our collective memory—and it never will. The innocent victims will continue to be remembered, while terrorism and those responsible for such acts will forever be condemned by history.
