Russian President Vladimir Putin defended Donald Trump following the Putin Trump Nobel Prize decision, praising the president’s peace efforts after the award went to Venezuelan democracy activist María Corina Machado.
Speaking at a summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Putin commended Trump’s work, specifically citing his efforts to broker a truce between the government of Israel and Hamas. “He’s really doing a lot to resolve such complex crises that have lasted for years and even decades,” Putin stated.
Putin Defends Trump Amid Nobel Snub
Putin continued his criticism of the Nobel committee’s decisions, suggesting that some past recipients were undeserving of the honor. “There have been cases where the committee has awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to people who have done nothing for peace,” he said.
“A person comes — good or bad — and gets it in a month, in two months — boom. For what?
He didn’t do anything at all,” Putin added. He concluded, “In my view, these decisions have done enormous damage to the prestige of this prize.”
Trump Predicted Snub in Putin Trump Nobel Prize Discussion
The Russian president’s comments followed earlier predictions by Trump himself. Speaking to military leaders in Quantico, Virginia, last month, Trump referenced his work on a potential Trump Israel Hamas peace deal.
After touting his progress on peace agreements, Trump predicted he would not be recognized by the Nobel committee. “Will you get the Nobel Prize? Absolutely not,” he said, adding, “They’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing.“
María Corina Machado Honored as Nobel Winner
The Nobel Peace Prize controversy comes as the award was officially given on Friday morning. This year’s recipient is Venezuelan opposition leader and democracy activist María Corina Machado.
