Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to make his first public appearance on October 18 following surgery for lung cancer. Citing Reuters, the Vatican reported that the 71-year-old pontiff is making a steady and gradual recovery.

Medical Evaluation and Angelus Prayer

According to medical statements, recent blood tests and chest X-rays have confirmed continuous improvement in his overall condition. Pope Leo XIV will lead the traditional Sunday noon Angelus prayer, marking his first appearance before the public since the surgical removal of the lower lobe of his right lung.

Surgical Treatment and Upcoming Foreign Travel

Elected in May 2025, Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed on October 13 with lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer, and underwent surgery that same day to remove the affected lung tissue.

Despite the recent medical intervention, preparations remain underway for the pontiff’s scheduled apostolic journey to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17.
