NASA Curiosity Rover Marks 5,000 Days on Mars
NASA’s Curiosity rover officially reached 5,000 Martian days, or sols, on August 29, 2026. The milestone coincides with the rover surpassing 1 kilometer of elevation gain since landing in Gale crater. Currently operating on the slopes of Mount Sharp, the mission team is utilizing the rover's advanced instrument suite to conduct in-situ chemical examinations of bedrock and wind-formed sand ripples to better understand Martian geological history.
The rover is currently investigating a prominent wind-formed ripple named “Chocolatal.” Scientists are using the ChemCam and MAHLI instruments to analyze the feature, which may be a transverse aeolian ridge. Researchers aim to determine if the ridge is active or stabilized, and how its composition compares to similar features found at lower elevations on the planet.
What are the next steps for the mission?
The mission team is performing detailed contact science on the Chocolatal ripple, including trenching the surface to assess grain size and layering. These observations are dedicated to the late planetary scientist Paul Geissler. Beyond this site, the rover continues its ascent of Mount Sharp, with ongoing atmospheric measurements and dust-devil surveys planned to support the broader goals of the Mars Science Laboratory mission.
