Recovered artifacts include a 1949 whist drive ticket, an 1889 newspaper clipping, and blank 1957 betting slips. Workers also discovered a 1966 newspaper page about the Great Train Robbery and a 1977 document detailing protocol for a diplomatic reception hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Why is the palace undergoing these major renovations?
The ongoing project, which began in 2017, is focused on replacing outdated electrical, plumbing, and heating infrastructure that had not been updated since the 1950s. Officials identified these systems as significant fire hazards that posed a risk to the building's long-term preservation. As part of the east wing restoration, workers removed and documented approximately 47,000 floorboards, leading to the discovery of these long-lost items. The project is scheduled for completion in March.
