Donald Trump’s sanctions decision to enact a 60-day pause on sanctions against Russia under the Graham Act has sparked fierce bipartisan pushback from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
Democratic Leadership Slams Concession to Moscow
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed disappointment, warning that the move would give an unwarranted boost to the Russian economy.
Democratic Representative Don Beyer of the US House of Representatives characterized the administration’s stance as a surrender to Moscow. Influential Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, who played a key role in drafting the Graham Act, stated that Trump’s decision is in no way connected to American national security interests.
Republican Lawmakers Demand Stronger Pressure
Trump’s move was also met with sharp criticism from Republican members of Congress. Representative French Hill emphasized the need for resolve, stating: “The United States needs to increase economic pressure on Russia, not decrease it. We must use every tool at our disposal, including full implementation of sanctions under the Graham Act.”
Republican Senators Thom Tillis, John Cornyn, and Darlene Graham also openly criticized Trump’s decision.
