A fire killed six people and injured seven others early Thursday in a two-story residential building in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood, according to the New York City Fire Department.
The blaze ignited around 1:40 a.m. on 58th Street between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue. Fire department officials stated that four victims died at the scene and two critically injured people died after transport to a hospital. Four civilians sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and three firefighters received minor injuries.
Witnesses reported that the fire started in the basement and moved through the row frame home before extending into an adjacent building. More than 200 firefighters and emergency workers deployed to combat the three-alarm blaze. Initial accounts varied on the duration of operations, with one report stating containment took about an hour while another indicated crews brought it under control in roughly three hours.
Investigation and Relief Efforts
Emergency crews recovered a lithium-ion battery on the property, but fire marshals have not determined whether it contributed to the ignition. The identities and ages of the deceased victims have not been released.
The fire displaced several neighboring families. The American Red Cross provided on-site relief, and hazardous materials teams responded to assist with the scene.
