These machines, which operate with no human in the cab, are currently performing rough earthmoving and foundation preparation tasks. The company is collaborating with major firms, including Sundt Construction, Champion Site Prep, and Zachry Construction Corporation, to integrate this technology into large-scale infrastructure projects to address industry-wide worker shortages.
The system, known as Bedrock Operator, utilizes machine learning to analyze the environment and plan complex digging movements. While the machines function autonomously, they maintain human oversight to ensure safety and provide intervention if a unit becomes stuck. The company reports that productivity levels are currently approaching those of human operators.
Is the technology safe for active job sites?
Safety protocols are integrated directly into the Bedrock Operator system to manage risks in dynamic work environments. If a person or unauthorized object enters the immediate vicinity of an active machine, the excavator is programmed to stop automatically. The system remains halted until the area is clear, requiring no manual intervention to resume operations, while remote human monitors remain available to assist if the machine encounters unusual conditions.
The company chose to focus on excavators because they represent a significant portion of construction fleets and require years of training to master. By automating repetitive earthmoving tasks, Bedrock aims to allow skilled human operators to focus on more complex project requirements.
