The escalating WNBA commissioner controversy saw Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson criticize Commissioner Cathy Engelbert after Napheesa Collier revealed Engelbert’s alleged dismissive comments about player concerns, officiating, and pay.
A’ja Wilson Responds to Allegations
Wilson, a four-time league MVP, made her remarks following a Game 5 overtime win Tuesday against the Indiana Fever. “I was honestly disgusted by the comments that Cathy made,” Wilson stated.
“But at the same time, I’m very appreciative that we have people like Phee in our committee of players’ association representing us,” Wilson added. She said players will “continue to make the push to stand on what we believe in.“
Players Association Details Conversation
The issue began when Players Association Vice President Napheesa Collier shared details of a conversation she had with Engelbert. The Napheesa Collier WNBA statement followed the Minnesota Lynx’s playoff elimination over the weekend.
Collier’s statement raised several WNBA players association issues, including player safety, officiating, and a perceived lack of accountability from the league.
The Escalating WNBA Commissioner Controversy
Collier accused Engelbert of dismissing concerns about officiating. “Her response was, ‘Well, only the losers complain about the refs,’” Collier alleged.
The Players Association VP also detailed the Cathy Engelbert Caitlin Clark comments. Collier claimed the commissioner said, “Caitlin should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn’t make anything.“
Collier further alleged that Engelbert told her, “‘Players should be on their knees thanking their lucky stars for the media rights deal that I got them.’“
Commissioner Engelbert Issues Statement
In a subsequent statement, Cathy Engelbert said she was “disheartened” by Collier’s characterization of their conversation. She affirmed her respect for all players in the league.
“I have the utmost respect for Napheesa Collier and for all the players in the WNBA,” Engelbert said. “Together, we have all worked tirelessly to transform this league.“
Engelbert concluded by stating her focus remains on ensuring a bright future for players and the WNBA. She noted this includes “collaborating on how we continue to elevate the game.“
