What was found in the Viking Age silver hoard?
A metal detectorist in Sysmä, Finland, recently discovered the nation's largest hoard of Viking Age silver. The collection weighs approximately ten pounds and includes thousands of coins, a bracelet, a charm, a bead, and pieces of hacksilver. These artifacts were recovered from two separate birch-bark containers buried about 40 feet apart, dating back to between 1000 and 1050 C.E.
The discovery occurred when Kalle Lappinen was scanning ground in his hometown. After his detector signaled, he unearthed the first cache and subsequently found a second stash nearby. Archaeologists from the Lahti City Museums arrived the following day to inspect the site. The find surpasses a previous record-holding five-pound stash discovered in 1895, marking a significant contribution to the historical record of the region.
Why was this Viking Age silver buried?
Archaeologists believe the treasure was intentionally hidden during a period of societal unrest in the 11th century. While the exact identity of the owners remains unknown, experts suggest the hoard was buried due to external threats from raiding groups. The fact that the silver was never recovered indicates that the individuals who hid it were unable to return for their belongings, leaving the cache undisturbed for centuries.
Although the items are classified as a Viking Age find, researchers note this does not imply the presence of Vikings in Finland. Instead, the hoard reflects Finland's historical connection to the Scandinavian cultural sphere through trade. Experts emphasize that responsible metal detecting in areas not typically explored by professionals continues to provide valuable new information about the past.
