President Donald Trump stated that he is "absolutely willing" to accept the outcome of the 2026 midterm elections and expressed readiness to work alongside congressional Democrats after Republicans lost their majorities. Speaking on his plans for divided government, the president affirmed that he intends to exercise his presidential "power of veto" to stop legislation he opposes, while keeping the door open to discussions with congressional leaders.

Democratic candidates secured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, flipping seats across several states including Michigan, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maine, and Minnesota. In New York, Republican Representative Mike Lawler quickly conceded his contested race after reassuring voters that tabulator problems involved no foul play.

Federal infrastructure oversight proceeded nationwide on election day, during which the Department of Justice deployed 1,000 monitors to polling locations. Anticipated extreme disruptions, such as the seizure of voting equipment or the dispatch of immigration officers to voting stations, did not occur.

Addressing prospective oversight actions from Capitol Hill, a Department of Justice representative stated that "DOJ officials are not afraid of threats from Democrats on the Hill: we have followed the law and will continue to do so." The agency had previously moved to halt Senate certification in Alaska and delivered subpoenas to California election administrators.
