Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed a new executive order aimed at dismantling so-called “birth tourism” schemes within the state.
Investigating Commercial Immigration Schemes
Under the order, several Texas agencies have been instructed to investigate hospitals, medical providers, and other organizations suspected of facilitating travel for foreign nationals specifically to secure U.S. citizenship for their children.
The investigation involves the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, the Office of Inspector General, the Department of State Health Services, the Texas Medical Board, the Board of Nursing, and the Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Regulatory Oversight and Penalties
Governor Abbott emphasized that Texas will not tolerate the exploitation of immigration laws. Medical professionals and institutions found participating in unlawful schemes may face rigorous investigations, disciplinary actions, and legal penalties.
This directive follows growing concerns regarding maternity packages allegedly marketed by some healthcare providers specifically to foreign nationals.
Clarifying Citizenship Rights
It is important to clarify that this executive order does not automatically revoke citizenship rights for children born in Texas. The primary focus remains on regulating hospitals, medical providers, and intermediaries accused of organizing commercial immigration schemes.
