What is the Americas Shield initiative?

The Americas Shield is a regional security framework promoted by the United States to synchronize efforts against transnational criminal organizations. By integrating Peru into this initiative, the U.S. aims to strengthen regional security, foster economic growth, and ensure that the future of the region remains under the sovereign control of each participating nation. The U.S. is currently coordinating these security and economic efforts with Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

Why is Peru joining the security pact?

The announcement was made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ahead of his scheduled visit to Lima as part of a three-country Latin American tour. Rubio highlighted that Peru is now considered an important major non-NATO ally. Beyond security, the collaboration focuses on deepening economic ties, with a specific emphasis on the development and trade of critical minerals between the United States and Peru.
