Canada’s separatist Parti Québécois (PQ) has won the provincial election in the province of Quebec.

Party leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon stated that a referendum on Quebec’s separation from Canada will be held after US President Donald Trump leaves office.

Referendum Plans and Election Results

However, the PQ failed to secure a majority in parliament. The 49-year-old Plamondon will become Quebec’s next premier. He said the referendum will give the people of Quebec the opportunity to determine the future of the country.

The separatists’ victory is changing the political landscape of Canada amid calls for national unity.

Meanwhile, a vote on starting the process of seceding from the country will be held in Alberta in two weeks.

Polls show that approximately 30 percent of Quebec residents support independence. Liberals and Conservatives have announced that they will never support an independence referendum.
