New York City has secured a landmark $131.5 million DoorDash NYC settlement after regulators found the delivery company systematically underpaid over 260,000 drivers. The agreement, announced Tuesday, resolves an investigation into 152 million trip records and directs $115 million directly back to affected delivery couriers across the five boroughs starting in late October.
How will delivery workers receive compensation?
More than 260,000 delivery workers who were underpaid between April 2022 and June 2026 will receive direct restitution starting in late October. The city allocated $115 million of the total fund specifically for driver compensation, with individual payouts reaching up to $5,000 depending on the trip hours that DoorDash excluded from calculations.
The remaining funds from the DoorDash NYC settlement will cover municipal fines and finance software allowing couriers to share payment data directly with regulators. Under the terms, DoorDash must submit driver payment and compliance data to the city for three years.
Why did New York penalize DoorDash?
An inquiry by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection revealed that DoorDash systematically failed to pay mandatory minimum rates. City officials noted the company excluded time spent on canceled trips and cross-boundary deliveries after minimum pay rules took effect. Although DoorDash publicly apologized and called the errors unintentional, city leaders described the underpayments as deliberate algorithm choices.
In a statement addressing the findings, DoorDash acknowledged operational failures and stated it was sorry to the workers it let down. Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the company's software models, emphasizing that new tools will allow couriers to crowdsource data and independently monitor algorithmic pay systems going forward.
