NASA has launched the Artifact InSPECtor project, inviting volunteers to assist in training artificial intelligence models to identify and remove artifacts from space telescope data. By analyzing signals caused by cosmic rays, electronic quirks, or light glints, participants help improve the accuracy of data collected by the ESA/NASA Euclid telescope and the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. This collaborative effort aims to better understand dark energy and the expansion of the universe.

Why is removing telescope artifacts important?

Telescope data often contains artifacts—signals that do not represent real astronomical objects—which can interfere with scientific analysis. These errors, similar to lens smudges on a camera, must be removed so researchers can accurately study galaxy spectra. By teaching AI tools to distinguish these artifacts from genuine cosmic data, volunteers play a critical role in ensuring that scientists can effectively map the universe and study supermassive black holes.
