Former NFL MVP Cam Newton publicly criticized Tagovailoa’s play, directly citing his four-year, $212.1 million contract extension. Newton argued that higher pay should bring higher expectations for the former passing leader.
“Tagovailoa is making more than Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts,” Newton said. “In this case, it should be more money, more expectations.“
Newton also commented on Tagovailoa’s demeanor. “I like quiet Tua. Alabama Tua.

In his response to the criticism, Tagovailoa suggested that being a media pundit is easier than playing in the league. He acknowledged that while Newton has his role, the on-field perspective is different.
“I think it’s easy to do that. I think anybody can do that,” Tagovailoa said. “I don’t think anybody can play quarterback.“
Tagovailoa, who has thrown five touchdowns and four interceptions this season, also admitted his performance has not met his own standards. His quarterback rating currently ranks among the bottom in the NFL.

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel defended his quarterback, praising Tagovailoa for his mental toughness during the team’s struggles. He noted that the quarterback has avoided many potential turnovers.
“It’s not an easy task to be in his shoes, but I’m very happy with where his mind is at and where his focus is at because if he was a weaker-minded individual, it’s tough for any quarterback,” McDaniel said.

The Dolphins are now preparing to host the New York Jets, who are also winless this season. McDaniel expressed confidence in his quarterback’s focus on the upcoming game.
“He’s focused on being 1-0 against the New York Jets, and that’s why I know he’s capable,” McDaniel said. “And I’m excited to see his next opportunity that we work on all week.“
