The friendly fire incident occurred on just the third play of the Chiefs’ 27-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. On a recent episode of his “New Heights” podcast, Kelce expressed deep remorse for his role in the collision.
Kelce Takes Full Accountability
The 13-year veteran stated he felt like “s—” and took “the most accountability” for the play. “I wasn’t ready that first drive, I ran into one of my guys and offed him out of the game,” Kelce said. “That’s one of the most frustrating parts and it’s hard to get your juices back going knowing you just hurt a guy.“
Kelce explained his intention on the play was to help his teammate. “I’m supposed to be running my route at depth for Worthy, so it’s frustrating for me, I was trying to set up my guy to be able to get in a position,” he said.

The collision dislocated Worthy’s shoulder, immediately removing a key offensive weapon from the game plan. Kelce called the play a “frustrating, frustrating, way to start off the game,” noting that Worthy had a good matchup. “Worthy had his guy beat and we’re out the gate and that game starts completely different,” Kelce added.
