President Donald Trump on Monday praised D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser for cooperating on the Trump D.C. crime crackdown, claiming the partnership has reduced crime in the nation’s capital to “virtually nothing.“
Trump Touts Success of D.C. Crime Crackdown
On Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social praising the mayor’s collaboration. “Wow! Mayor Muriel Bowser of D.C. has become very popular because she worked with me and my great people in bringing crime down to virtually nothing in D.C.,” he wrote.
He contrasted her actions with other Democratic leaders, whom he accused of trying “to justify violent crime instead of working with us to completely eliminate it.” Trump also claimed Bowser’s approval rating has risen by 25 percent.
Washington D.C. Violent Crime Statistics Show Decline
Mayor Bowser acknowledged falling crime numbers at a news conference last Wednesday. “The most significant thing that we are highlighting today is the area of crime that was most troubling for us in 2023, and we have driven it down over the last year,” Bowser stated.
Since the federal surge started, carjackings are down 87% and overall violent crime has dropped by 45%. During this period, arrests have increased by 20%, and illegal gun recoveries are up 12%.
National Guard Deployed to D.C. Amid Crackdown
The effort, which involved having the National Guard deployed to D.C., has yielded significant results according to Attorney General Pam Bondi. On Monday, she announced that the crackdown has led to 1,599 arrests and the seizure of 165 illegal guns.
The Donald Trump Muriel Bowser cooperation was framed by the president as a major success. “Congratulations to Mayor Muriel Bowser, but don’t go woke on us,” Trump added, calling the situation “a giant victory.“
Trump Threatens to Send National Guard to Cities
Following the operation in Washington, Trump has threatened to deploy National Guard troops to other Democratic-run cities facing high crime rates. He referenced a past deployment to Los Angeles during riots as a successful model for federal intervention.
