The New England Patriots have claimed quarterback Tommy DeVito off waivers, forcing the fan-favorite to leave his New Jersey home after the New York Giants cut him ahead of the season.
Why the Giants Cut Tommy DeVito
The New York Giants made the difficult decision following a preseason that featured a crowded quarterbacks room. The team opted to move forward with Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart on the roster.
DeVito, 27, had a strong preseason performance, completing 30 of his 38 pass attempts for 323 yards. He threw four touchdown passes against only one interception.
A ‘Disappointing’ Departure
According to his agent, Sean Stellato, the move was met with some sadness. “ Tommy being such a fierce competitor and obviously loving his hometown team, I mean that definitely was disappointing,” Stellato said.
DeVito grew up rooting for the Giants.
Despite the initial disappointment, Stellato noted that DeVito is ready for the next chapter of his career. “He’s looking forward to the opportunity and challenges in front of him to now be a member of the New England Patriots,” he stated.
Leaving the Tommy DeVito New Jersey Home
The move requires DeVito to leave his childhood home in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, where he lived with his parents. His living situation became a well-known part of his story during his time with the Giants.
DeVito, who earned the “Tommy Cutlets” nickname, will not be leaving empty-handed. Stellato confirmed his mother will ensure he is well-stocked, stating, “There’ll be frozen cutlets filling up the freezer, she’ll make sure he has all her homemade sauces and all that other good stuff as well.“
The Tommy DeVito Patriots Quarterback Role
DeVito joins a team with an established Patriots quarterback depth chart. Drake Maye is set to be the franchise starter in his second season, with journeyman Joshua Dobbs expected to serve as his primary backup.
The Patriots placed DeVito on their active roster to begin the season. He will provide additional depth at the position, and injuries could create an opportunity for him to play.
A Look Back at His Giants Stardom
DeVito gained fame in 2023 when he took over for an injured Daniel Jones. As a starter, he went 3-3, completing 64% of his passes for 1,101 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.
He also saw action last season after the team moved on from Jones midseason.
